Part One: Opening Theory

Forty-one games over nine years. Two grandmasters, one rivalry the whole circuit talks about, and one conversation neither man has ever dared to open. The commentators call it the Berg–Stone file. They have no idea what they're watching.

THE GAMES

Five-part series. One tournament at a time. The Long Game is a five-part series designed to unfold like a grandmaster's correspondence. Each volume represents a distinct phase of a long-term rivalry, chronicling the slow-burn progression of two men who play the black pieces by preference. The narrative structure follows the logic of a chess tournament, where each 'game' is a chapter of strategy, sacrifice, and the quiet intimacy of response. This is a story of men who take years to resign, told through the lens of a tournament hall at night.
